A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's major public works projects.
The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a line constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify what caused this tragedy,” stated the country's president.
The president reported that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the previous administration, whose term concluded the year before. This venture was closely associated with his administration's developmental agenda for the southern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both rail lines was overseen by the armed forces, marking a dramatic increase of its responsibilities in public projects. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, defying forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously fueled ongoing questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This involves an previous accident this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a primary political opposition demanded an immediate pause in the development and management of all such projects.
This stoppage was suggested while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the loss of life "calls for prompt explanations."
In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been functioning in complete compliance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these national projects.
